The important consumer fair The Negenmaandenbeurs started just a few days ago, a good time to share some important babytrends with you:
No stroller but a baby carrier
A stroller was invented so you don’t have to carry your baby anymore and to have your hands free. But nowadays there is a growing group of parents who like to carry their baby in a baby carrier and don’t have a stroller anymore! This group of parents are mostly strong believers of natural parenting and choose an ergonomic baby carrier, specially developed for the ‘happy hips’ position. Further, I see more and more carriers made of special materials such as recyclable fiber and breathable fabrics so you and your baby don’t get too warm. Nice to know: I see more and more fathers in the street carrying their babies, just look at the promotional material from manufacturers!
Strollers: more comfort
Whether you prefer a practical stroller because you live on the third floor, or you prefer a fashionable stroller, there’s a stroller for everyone. Strollers used to be small and compact for parents ‘on the go’, but fortunately now more attention is paid to the comfort of the child with larger carrycots and seats. High strollers are becoming very popular, ideal for having better contact with your baby but it also saves your back by taking your child in and out!
The latest technologies are the strollers which can be folded in and out by one push of a button and safety gadgets such as a security light on the front wheel. Also, the first recyclable pram is for sale in The Netherlands. A stroller doesn’t have to be expensive: by increasing competition and economic recession brands offer complete strollers with good value for money.
Safe i-Size car seats
De new i-Size standard which is introduced requires a lot of adaptations by car seat manufacturers. They are working hard to make all car seats i-Size proof. In addition, your child will be transported facing back using ISOFIX. Focus is on the length of the child instead of weight. These seats offer better protection in case of frontal and side collisions. With car seats, safety is number one of course, but there is increasing attention for the comfort of the child; there are carseats where your child can be transported in a lying position and some seats have head side supports which grow with your child. However, the combination with i-Size still seems to be a difficult task.
Babyfood: eating from reusable pouches
Based on the adult breakfasts ‘on the go’ we see a lot of squeeze bags with fruit and vegatable snacks. Convenient for traveling or if you are in a hurry! On international trade shows I also saw reusable squeeze pouches for home made smoothies of fruit and vegetables. However, some experts are critical about this way of feeding: they say you don’t learn your child to eat properly and it can influence the development of your child’s mouth!
Baby Skin Care: no harmful ingredients please
Irritations, allergies, endocrine disruptors …Harmful substances in baby skin care can cause much harm, so if there are care products for children without these harmful ingredients, then of course yes please! There appear more and more brands on the market without or with less harmful ingredients. Large manufacturers follow this trend and adjust their formulas.
Baby furniture: let it grow
It is trend to choose for a baby nursery that can be changed into a teen room. Smart, less expensive and durable! The crib can be transferred into a teen bed, the dresser into a desk. Decoration trends: next to common nursery rooms with a theme (think of nature, princesses and princes, marine), it is hip to mix and match vintage with new. Perfection in the nursery makes place for ‘underlayment’ which stands for unfinished, basic and a tough look.
Knowledge is power
Technique is becoming increasingly important in the baby industry. What about a baby romper that indicates how warm or cold your baby is? Or a device that measures how much breastfeeding you have given with one breast? Or a thermometer that measures the temperature of your baby without skin contact? The newest generation baby monitors show your baby on smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi or mobile internet!
Sustainable and green
Moms of today ask for responsible made baby products which are produced with respect for people and environment. As a mother, you simply want the best for your child and therefore you want to know where products are made. Mothers also look critically whether something is really necessary or not. ‘Getting rid of things’ and ‘sustainability’ are the keywords. Therefore children stuff is not thrown away after use, but can have a second life. Websites for second hand baby and children stuff and clothes swap parties flourish as never before.

Geen kinderwagen maar een babydrager
Een kinderwagen is uitgevonden om een baby niet meer te hoeven dragen en je handen vrij te hebben. Maar inmiddels is er een groeiende groep ouders die hun baby in een babydrager vervoert en geen kinderwagen heeft! Deze groep ouders heeft het natuurlijk ouderschap meestal hoog in het vaandel staan en is een groot voorstander van ergonomisch babydragen. De ergonomische babydragers waarbij baby’s beentjes in een ‘gespreide hurkhouding’ zitten, nemen dan ook een grote vlucht. Ook is er aandacht voor bijzondere materialen zoals recyclebare vezels, ademende stoffen waardoor jij en je baby het niet te warm krijgen. In het straatbeeld zie ik steeds meer vaders hun baby dragen, kijk maar naar het reclamemateriaal van fabrikanten! Daarom zitten er altijd wat stoere modellen en kleuren in het assortiment.
Kinderwagens: meer comfort
Of je nu een praktische kinderwagen wilt omdat je drie hoog woont, of liever een fashionable kinderwagen wilt of gaat voor een klassieker, er is voor iedereen wat wils. Waren de fabrikanten een paar jaar geleden vooral bezig de kinderwagen zo klein en compact mogelijk te maken voor mobiele ouders, tegenwoordig is er gelukkig meer aandacht voor het comfort en de bewegingsruimte van het kind in een reiswieg en zitje. De hoge kinderwagens zijn nog steeds populair, daarmee heb je beter contact met je kindje en het spaart je rug met het in- en uitnemen!
De laatste technische snufjes zijn de kinderwagens die zich met één druk op de knop in en uit kunnen vouwen en die al met een beetje duwkracht vooruitrijden. En wat dacht je van een veiligheidslicht op het voorwiel? Ook is de eerste recyclebare kinderwagen in Nederland te koop. Een kinderwagen hoeft niet duur te zijn: door de toenemende concurrentie en economische teruggang verschijnen er andere merken op de markt die een complete kinderwagen leveren voor een goede prijs- kwaliteitverhouding.
Veilige i-Size autostoelen
De nieuwe i-Size norm die gefaseerd wordt ingevoerd vraagt veel aanpassingen van autostoelfabrikanten. Zij zijn keihard aan het werk om hun autostoelen helemaal i-Size proof te maken. Daarbij wordt je kind achterwaarts vervoerd met behulp van Isofix. De indeling van de stoelen vindt plaats op basis van lengte in plaats van gewicht. Deze autostoelen bieden nog betere bescherming bij frontale en zijwaartse botsingen. Bij autostoelen staat veiligheid op nummer één maar er is steeds meer aandacht voor het comfort van het kind: zo zijn er autostoelen waarbij je kindje ook in een ligstand vervoerd kan worden en er zijn hoofd- en zijsteunen die met het kindje meegroeien. De combinatie met i-Size blijkt echter een lastige opgave.
Babyvoeding: eten uit een zakje
In supermarkten zie je in navolging van volwassen ontbijtjes ‘on the go’ ook knijpzakjes met fruithapjes en groenteprutjes. Deze vorm van babyvoeding is handig voor onderweg of als je haast hebt! Ook zag ik op de internationale vakbeurs herbruikbare knijpzakjes voor smoothies, of groente- en fruitpureetjes. Je kunt je wel afvragen of je kinderen zo goed leren eten…
Baby huidverzorging: zonder schadelijke stoffen graag
Irritaties, allergieën, hormoonverstorende stoffen… Schadelijke stoffen kunnen veel kwaad aanrichten, dus als er verzorgingsproducten zijn voor kinderen zonder deze schadelijke stoffen, dan natuurlijk graag! Er verschijnen steeds meer merken op de markt zonder of met minder schadelijke stoffen. Grote fabrikanten volgen deze trend en passen hun formules aan.
Babykamer meubelen: doorgroeien maar
Steeds meer ouders kiezen voor doorgroei babykamer meubelen omdat deze veel langer meegaan dan de babytijd. Dus slim en duurzaam! Van het ledikant maak je later een eenpersoonsbed, van de commode een bureau.
Qua inrichting zien we naast de bekende themakamertjes (denk aan de zee, natuur, prinsessen en sprookjeskamers), vooral een mix and match van vintage en nieuw. Perfectie maakt plaats voor ‘underlayment’ ofwel: onafgewerkt, basic en stoer. Zie ook de laatste trends voor inrichting.
Meten is weten
De techniek wordt steeds belangrijker in de babyindustrie. Wat te denken van een babyrompertje dat aangeeft hoe warm of koud je baby het heeft, of een apparaat dat meet hoeveel borstvoeding je hebt gegeven, of een thermometer die de temperatuur van je baby opmeet zonder huidcontact maar ook kamertemperatuur en melk? Via een app kun je de cijfers op smartphone of tablet laten registreren. Het laatste product is al daadwerkelijk op de markt, de andere vragen nog wat studie. Ook op babyfoongebied gaan de ontwikkelingen razendsnel: er zijn al hybride babyfoons die je kunt bekijken op je smartphone of tablet via wifi of mobiel internet!
Duurzaam en groen
Er is een toenemende vraag naar verantwoord gemaakte babyproducten met respect voor mens en milieu. Als moeder wil je nu eenmaal het beste voor je kind en daarom willen veel moeders weten waar producten vandaan komen. Ook wordt er kritisch gekeken of iets nu wel of niet echt nodig is. ‘Ontspullen’ en duurzaamheid luidt het sleutelwoord: kinderspullen worden niet zomaar weggegooid maar krijgen een tweede leven via tweedehands sites, beurzen of ruilparty’s!
