Nest is a US company (owned by Google / Alphabet) that develops products that makes the life of people a little easier. Like a thermostat that automatically adjusts to the rhythm of life as it programs itself during operation. Or a smoke detector that tests itself and where you can turn off the alarm with your phone.
Nest has now applied for a new patent for a product that excites my curiosity: a crib with sensors. The patent application is a huge list of features for this connected crib, too extensive to treat them all here. In short, it means that all movements and the baby’s body can be monitored. The crib sensors are processed everywhere as well as technique that can be connected to anything. Think of a camera that you can use as a baby monitor, but also sensors that measures your baby’s sleep and temperature, if your baby has a cold or has a full diaper, it can even play a song or a movie to soothe your baby. There are LED lights which enables you to put your baby back in its crib to sleep. And if your toddler dares to climb out of his crib then a closing mechanism starts working. No idea how this works.
Do we want this as parents, I wonder? Developments in baby technology go fast, I know. I am aware of the fact that more and more sensors are processed in sensors in clothes and diapers. But this digital cradle is very over the top. Do we want a digital watchdog where parents hardly are involved anymore? There have been long discussions about the possible danger of radiation from baby monitors. With these techniques your child will definitely get an overdose of electron radiation…Nest is een Amerikaans bedrijf (eigendom van Google/Alphabet) dat producten ontwikkelt die het mensenleven een stukje gemakkelijker maken. Zoals een thermostaat die zich automatisch aan het leefritme aanpast omdat deze zich tijdens het gebruik zelf programmeert. Of een rookmelder die zichzelf test en waarvan je het alarm met je mobiel kunt uitzetten.
Nu heeft Nest een nieuw patent aangevraagd voor een product dat mijn nieuwsgierigheid prikkelt: een babybedje met sensoren. Op de patentaanvraag staat een enorme waslijst aan functies voor dit connected babybedje, te uitgebreid om hier allemaal te behandelen. In het kort komt het er op neer dat alle bewegingen en lichaamsfuncties van de baby in de gaten kunnen worden gehouden. In het bedje zijn overal sensoren verwerkt evenals techniek die op van alles kan worden aangesloten. Denk aan een camera die je ook als babyfoon kunt gebruiken, maar ook sensoren die slaap en temperatuur opmeten, een seintje geeft als je baby moet niezen of hoesten, als je baby een volle luier heeft, een liedje speelt en zelfs een filmpje afspeelt om je kindje te kalmeren. Er is zelfs LED verlichting zodat je je kindje rustig in zijn bedje kunt terug leggen. En waagt je dreumes het om uit zijn bedje te klimmen dan treedt het afsluitmechanisme in werking. Geen idee wat ik me daarbij moet voorstellen.
Willen we dit als ouders vraag ik me af? Dat er ontwikkelingen in techniek in babyspullen zijn is mij bekend, ook dat er gewerkt wordt aan het verwerken van sensoren in kleding en luiers. Maar dit digitale wiegje gaat wel heel erg over de top. Willen we een soort digitale waakhond waar geen ouder meer aan te pas komt? Er zijn hele discussies geweest over het mogelijk gevaar van straling van babyfoons. Verwerk al deze technieken en je kind krijgt zeker een overdosis elektrostraling…
